I recently installed Windows 7 on my new ASUS U50 laptop, and all is working great.. I just didn’t like the default logon screen that came with it. Under XP you needed a 3rd party application (like tune up utilities) but now it’s just a simple registry adjustment.
you can find the complete article here;
And here’s the short version;
Open the Registry editor and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background and check DWORD value named OEMBackground. It is 1 for enabled and 0 for disabled.
The images shown are taken from %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds So, just place your images in the above directory and please note that the size should be 256KB at max.
Important !
Now put in any JPG file with size less than 256 kb in this folder and rename it to backgroundDefault.jpg. This file will be stretched to fit the screen, so you would want it to match the resolution of your screen so that image doesn’t look bad. You can something like smush.it or Photoshop’s Save as/Save for Web feature to reduce image size.
