I own a sandisk cruzer U3 drive, and I recently installed Windows 7 on my laptop. U3 (for now) doesn’t work on windows 7. I also think portableapps has more to offer then U3.

On a U3 drive you actually have 2 partitions, 1 virtual CD and a normal partition where you store your data. The CD part uses the autorun function to automaticly start the U3 launchpad.

Since it doesn’t work on Windows 7 there had to be a way to use the CD partition to launch portableapps instead of the U3 launchpad. I searched google and found a great tutorial to replace the U3 software with your own custom software.

Just follow the steps provided here ; http://portableapps.com/node/5221

A description of portableapps ;

With portableapps you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind.

PortableApps.com provides a truly open platform that works with any hardware you like (USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive, etc). The entire platform is open source built around an open format that any hardware or software provider can use.

The PortableApps.com Suite and Platform is free. It contains no spyware. There are no advertisements. It isn’t a limited or trial version. There is no additional hardware or software to buy. You don’t even have to give out your email address. It’s 100% free to use, free to copy and free to share.

I just didn’t like the default logon screen that came with it. Under XP you needed a 3rd party application (like tune up utilities) but now it’s just a simple registry adjustment.

you can find the complete article here;

http://www.blogsolute.com

And here’s the short version;

Open the Registry editor and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background and check DWORD value named OEMBackground. It is 1 for enabled and 0 for disabled.

The images shown are taken from %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds So, just place your images in the above directory and please note that the size should be 256KB at max.

Important !

Now put in any JPG file with size less than 256 kb in this folder and rename it to backgroundDefault.jpg. This file will be stretched to fit the screen, so you would want it to match the resolution of your screen so that image doesn’t look bad. You can something like smush.it or Photoshop’s Save as/Save for Web feature to reduce image size.
